IWGS SYMPOSIUM IN NAPLES, FLORIDA, USA, August 24 - 28, 2022

Message par MARS »

The IWGS is excited to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the New Waterlily Competition at the 2022 Symposium in Naples, Florida. Join us at the growing tanks in Naples Botanical Garden and vote in the popular Peoples Choice Award.

This year's symposium is packed with excitement. We have 3 days of plant-based activities planned for you! On day one, you can take part in a variety of tours led by Naples Botanical Garden leadership staff at the beautiful Naples Botanical Gardens. Choose to accompany Danny Cox in a 'behind the scene' look at pumps and plumbing of their large water features, join the Highlights of the Garden tour, or learn about the diverse plants and ecological relationships of the Smith Uplands Preserve. If food is on your mind, learn about the Tropical Fruit and Edible Plants of Southeast Asia. Our afternoon educational sessions features Brandon McLane of Florida Aquatic Nurseries who will show us the tricks to tropical waterlily hybridization, followed by a presentation by Pat Faehnle about Invasive Species - "Life in the Sunshine State". After that, you can join more behind the scenes tours by the Naples Botanical Garden leadership staff at the Herbarium Collection, learn about the Garden’s common epiphytic plants and how they are grown successfully in an outdoor subtropical garden, learn about the History and Design of Naples Botanical Garden’s Water Features, or, if you are in the Florida spirit and want to hop on a golf cart then we have the tour for you! Chad Washburn will escort you around and explain the storm water treatment for the Garden. Cross your fingers for clear skies because this tour will be canceled in the event of rain. For relaxation in the evening, we will round out the night with a sunset dinner cruise onboard the Naples Princess.

Day two holds even more gems for your enjoyment! Friday we start by watching Tim Jennings, Longwood Gardens and Kathy Cahill, Naples Botanical Garden dive deep into the fascinating world of growing, pollinating, storage and conservation of Victoria Waterlilies / Water Platters, followed by Laura Bancroft of Ten Mile Creek Nursery letting you take a peek into The Diary of a Lotus Farmer. In the afternoon, have your mind blown into outer space by Ed Rosenthal of Florikan LLC explaining Space Plant Biology – Growing Veggies in Space.

You then dive into the competition waterlily ponds to explore the last 25 years of Innovation of The New Waterlily Competition. This session will cover the history of the competition and you will get a vote in this years People’s Choice category. Kelly Billing will moderate a panel of former and current growers of the NWC as they discuss hybridizing and what constitutes a
great waterlily. You will round out the evening with a happy hour in Kapnick Hall - courtesy
of Naples Botanical Garden - followed by dinner and a presentation: Water- The Heart and
Soul of the Garden by the keynote speaker - Raymond Jungles, Raymond Jungles LLC.

Two days of garden glory not enough? No problem - there is more! On Saturday you hop on a bus with the whole gang and take a straight shot right across the state to Florida Aquatic Nurseries where you will get a tour of one of the world's largest waterlily producers from the owner himself. After picking your jaw up off the ground, you move on to visit Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden where we will have lunch waiting for you. Next stop The Kampong National Tropical Botanical Garden then dinner at Evelyn Greer Park before heading back via Alligator Alley to your hotel in Naples.

Don’t forget to join your fellow attendees each evening in the hospitality room to renew friendships from past symposiums, make new friendships, and participate in chats about our favorite topic of discussion - the water garden industry. You may arrive as a stranger, but you will leave with many new friends and so many wonderful memories.

We are all tired of virtual presentations and are excited to see everyone in person in Naples, Florida this year.

Your registration fee covers all of the seminars, tours, food and transportation once the Symposium begins!
